Collection: Matt Brown

Matt Brown makes woodblock prints using the traditional Japanese _hanga_ method. Hanga is color woodblock printing with multiple blocks using water, pigments, and rice paste. It was the technique used to make the ukiyo-e and shin hanga prints of Japan. Each print is hand-rubbed, often from 10 or more separate carved blocks. Highest quality artist pigments, rice paste, and acid-free cotton rag paper are his printing materials.  Brushes and a hand-held baren are his printing tools.

Matt’s print imagery is mostly of New England with a focus on the lakes and mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire. Fascinated by how making and enjoying two-dimensional art can change the way we see our world, Matt has expanded his interest in making and selling his own art to selling and sharing the art of others. In 2017 he took over an existing art and craft gallery in his hometown of Lyme, renaming it Matt Brown Fine Art. This single-member LLC is the parent entity owning and operating The New Leaf Gallery. Pleased to be involved in the encouraging of exchange and connection of art in our lives, Matt remains hopeful of a vibrant role for the making and enjoying of handmade prints in our collective future.
